Is Sprout Social free? No. There is no free plan. You get a 30-day trial with no credit card, and after that you pick a paid plan, the cheapest being Essentials at $79 per seat a month on yearly billing or $99 on monthly billing. If you run a small community, a game channel or a side project, that is a lot to spend on a social tool. This page lists what you can actually use for free, and what each free option covers.
What Sprout Social does, in one paragraph
Sprout Social is a social media management suite. It schedules and publishes posts, collects comments and messages in one inbox, reports on performance and, as a paid add-on from the Standard plan, listens to conversations about your brand. The tools below each cover part of that. None covers all of it for free, so start by picking the part you need.
Free option 1: AyeWatch Free Preview, for hearing what people say
If what you want is to know when your game, stream or project gets mentioned, AyeWatch is the most direct fit. It watches the web and social platforms and only alerts you when a new post or article matches what you asked for.
Free Preview gives you three monitoring runs, across up to three topics, at Daily or slower intervals, with no card. The runs do not renew, so treat it as a test drive rather than a permanent free tier. That is enough to see whether it finds the Reddit threads and YouTube videos you care about.
After the preview, Pro is $9 a month for up to 50 monitors checked hourly. Usage counts in monitoring credits; most checks cost one.
What you can watch:
- Subreddits and Reddit users
- YouTube channels
- X profiles, communities and searches
- TikTok profiles, Instagram searches and hashtags, LinkedIn company posts
- News sites, blogs, forums and any web page you add, such as a patch notes page
What it will not do: post for you, schedule anything or answer comments.
Free option 2: Buffer Free, for posting
Buffer's free plan lets you connect up to three channels and keep ten scheduled posts queued per channel. When a post goes out, the slot frees up again. It includes one user and some basic AI help with writing.
For a solo creator posting to, say, X, Instagram and TikTok, that covers the scheduling part of Sprout Social without paying anything. Paid Buffer starts at $5 per channel a month billed yearly if you need more. Buffer does not listen for mentions.
Free option 3: trials, if you need the full suite for a short job
Some suites let you try everything for a couple of weeks:
| Tool | Trial length | Card needed |
|---|---|---|
| Sprout Social | 30 days | No |
| Hootsuite | 14 days | No |
| Brand24 | 14 days | Not stated on the pricing page |
| Buffer paid plans | 14 days | Not stated on the pricing page |
A trial is fine for a launch week or a one-off campaign. It is not a long-term plan, and you need to remember to cancel or choose a plan.
A free setup that covers most of Sprout for a small project
- Schedule posts to your three main accounts with Buffer Free.
- Run AyeWatch Free Preview on your project name and your main competitor or genre, to see what it catches.
- If the alerts are useful, move to AyeWatch Pro for $9 a month and keep Buffer free.
That pairing costs $9 a month once the preview runs out, against $79 or more per seat for Sprout Social.
When Sprout Social is still worth paying for
If several people reply to fans from one shared inbox, need approvals or have to send performance reports to a sponsor, Sprout Social is designed for that, and the free tools above are not. For one person with a few accounts, they usually are enough.
You can start the AyeWatch preview here, no card required.
