Most people who search for keyword gap analysis free are hoping for a tool that compares their site with a rival's at no cost. The honest picture: you can do a useful slice of the work for free with Google's own tools and some patience, but the part that lists a competitor's rankings needs paid data. Here is how far the free route goes, and the smallest paid step after it.
What a gap analysis needs
Two lists. The searches your site ranks for, and the searches a competitor ranks for. Subtract the first from the second and you have the gap: topics where the rival collects visits and you have nothing.
Your own list is free. The rival's list is the expensive half, because Google does not publish another site's rankings.
Free step 1: your own rankings from Search Console
Google Search Console's Performance report shows the queries your verified site appears for, with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. Export it. This is your side of the comparison, and it is measured data rather than an estimate.
It also gives you the "weak" list for free. Sort by position and look at queries where you sit between roughly 11 and 30. Those are topics you already cover where someone else is ahead. Improving those pages is often faster than writing new ones.
Free step 2: read the results pages by hand
For the rival's side, the free method is slow but works for a short list.
- Write down 20 to 30 searches your buyers would type.
- Search each one in a private window, set to the country you sell in.
- Note every time the competitor shows on the first two pages and you do not.
- Note which of their pages ranks.
After an hour you will have a rough gap list and, more usefully, a feel for what Google rewards. If the same competitor page keeps appearing, that page is a brief by itself.
The catch is that you only find gaps for searches you already thought of. The topics you never considered stay invisible, and those are often the valuable ones.
Free step 3: skip what you should not chase
Whatever list you end up with, cut three kinds of term:
- Searches for the rival's own brand.
- Searches whose results do not match what you offer. Look at the page before you trust the volume.
- Topics you already have a page on. Those belong in the weak list.
Where free stops
Without a data source you cannot see the full list of what a competitor ranks for, how many people search each term, or how hard each one is. That is the point where a paid tool earns its cost.
The cheapest paid step
Full SEO suites bill monthly. Semrush lists its SEO plan at $139 a month and Ahrefs lists Lite at $129 a month. They do much more than gap analysis, and they make sense if you use them every week.
If you need a gap list a few times a year, seogeoaeo.ai charges per run instead. Its Keyword Gap tool takes your site, one rival and a country, and returns up to the 300 most searched terms the rival ranks for in Google's top 20 that you do not rank for. Each comes with estimated search volume, difficulty, intent and cost per click, plus a list of the rival pages that win the most of them.
| Option | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Free | Your own queries and positions |
| Manual results checks | Free, about an hour | A rough gap list for searches you already know |
| seogeoaeo.ai Keyword Gap | 85 credits a run, plans from $29 a month for 2,000 credits | The rival's top-20 terms you miss, with estimates |
| Monthly SEO suite | From $129 or $139 a month | Gap reports plus tracking, audits and more |
Note that seogeoaeo.ai has no free credits for this tool. The home page offers a free preview of your site's crawl and on-page health, and credits come only with a plan. A run where the data provider has no record of the two sites is refunded; one that compares them and finds no gap is still charged.
A sensible order
Start with Search Console and an hour of manual checks. If that shows your rival is clearly winning searches you care about, spend one paid run to see the full picture. Run a keyword gap check once you know which competitor to compare against.
