You can remove white background from image files in Word with the Set Transparent Color option: select the picture, go to Picture Format, then Color, then Set Transparent Color, and click the white. If you want a clean transparent PNG to use outside the document, the free AyeTab Background Remover does it in your browser instead.

Word's option is handy for a quick school project, a party flyer or a newsletter, but it has limits worth knowing before you spend time on it.

Steps in Word

  1. Add the image to your document as a picture. Microsoft says the option works only on an inserted picture, not on one placed inside a shape.
  2. Click the picture so the Picture Format tab appears.
  3. Select Color, then Set Transparent Color. The pointer changes.
  4. Click a white area of the picture. That colour turns transparent.
  5. If the result looks wrong, select Reset Picture in the Adjust group and try again.

Microsoft's own help page lists the catches. You can make only one colour transparent, so a background with several shades of white will keep some of them. Areas that look like a single colour are often made of subtle variations, so you may see speckles left behind. The option works best on simple solid-colour pictures such as clip art. And it does not work in Word for the web; you need the desktop app on Windows or macOS.

When Word is enough, and when it is not

You want to Use
Make a white box disappear inside one document Word, Set Transparent Color
Get a transparent PNG for a slide, website or sticker AyeTab Background Remover
Clean up off-white paper or a photo of a drawing AyeTab, with "Pick from image"
Cut a person or pet out of a busy photo An AI tool such as remove.bg

The key difference is the file. Word changes how the picture shows in that document. A separate tool gives you a new image you can drop anywhere.

Doing it with AyeTab instead

The AyeTab Background Remover is free and opens in any browser tab, with nothing to install and no account.

  1. Drop your image onto the page.
  2. Leave Background colour on "Auto from corners"; for a white-background picture that picks up the white.
  3. If grey or cream patches remain, raise Tolerance. If white bits of your picture disappear too, lower it.
  4. Smooth rough edges with Edge feather, and tick "Remove colour spill" if a pale outline remains.
  5. Select Download PNG.

Because the tool does the colour keying on your own device, the picture is not uploaded anywhere. You can then insert that PNG into Word and skip Set Transparent Color entirely, which also avoids its one-colour limit.

Why the PNG route is often better

A picture with a transparent background made in Word only behaves that way inside that one document. Copy it into a slide, a website builder or a sticker app and you may find the white box back, or the picture flattened. A PNG with real transparency travels with you: you can use it in documents, slides and web pages alike, and you only have to make it once.

Tips for a cleaner result

  • Start with the largest copy of the image you have. Small, compressed pictures have fuzzier edges.
  • Photos of paper are rarely pure white. In AyeTab, use "Pick from image" and click the paper itself.
  • Check the result on a dark page colour. Leftover white shows up there straight away.
  • Keep the file as PNG. Saving it as JPG brings the white back, because JPG cannot store transparency.

If you do this often, the AyeTab extension for Chrome keeps the same tool on your new tab, so it is one click away the next time a picture arrives with a white box around it.
