About the game

Crazy eights, the card game I play the most on long trips. Each city has a host with their own house rule, like the people you meet on the way. Eights Up is a classic shedding card game with a passport. Play a card that matches the top of the pile by suit or by number, and be the first to empty your hand. Eights are wild: play one on anything and name the suit that comes next. The deck is drawn for this game with four suits: Suns, Waves, Peaks and Kites. Each suit has its own colour and symbol, so you never have to tell colours apart. Travel from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro and sit down at a card table in each city. Every host has a personality: Inês plays it safe, Youssef sheds his big cards first, Mehmet fires off every skip he holds, Sigrún saves her eights and Mia plays on a whim. Each city brings a gentle new rule, from twos that make the next player draw two and jacks that skip a turn, to queens that reverse play, kings that play again and a final table with every rule at once. When a round ends, you score the cards left in the other hands. The first to the target wins the match and earns up to three stars. Quick play lets you pick one to three opponents and your own house rules.

How to play

Tap or click a raised card to play it; it must match the top card by suit or number. Eights are wild: play one and pick the next suit. If nothing fits, draw a card, then play it or keep it. Empty your hand to win the round and score the points left in the other hands; first to the target wins. House rules in some cities: 2s make the next player draw two, jacks skip, queens reverse, kings play again. Keyboard: arrows choose a card, Enter plays, D draws, 1 to 4 pick a suit, Escape pauses.
