A teal estate car on the grey cobbles of a market square, caked in brown mud except for one broad, crisp clean stripe along its doors. A jet of water and white suds cleans the windscreen. The spray gun is at the lower right and a yellow pressure washer stands beside the car.

About the game

The taxi rank sim is still not ready, so here is a different sim. Washing minibuses gave me the idea, then it grew into a whole seaside town. Rinse & Shine is a calm pressure-washing game set in a little seaside town. Each job is a grimy object or a small scene: a bench on the green, a garden gnome, a delivery bike, a dinghy, the market fountain, a red phone box, a playground slide, a row of beach huts and the lighthouse itself. Hold the spray on the dirt and watch the clean colours come through, stroke by stroke. Every job is split into parts, like the seat and backrest of a bench or the wheels and frame of a bike. Each part has its own percentage and pings with a sparkle when it is clean. Once a job reaches 95% the last specks glow, and the hint button turns you to whatever is left, so you are never stuck hunting. The job ends at 100%. The grime is varied: mud, road grime, sand, algae, moss, rust, oil stains, chalk doodles and gull droppings. Soft dirt rinses off with a wide spray, but moss, rust and oil need a narrower nozzle, a step closer or the right soap. Spend your pay on four nozzles, four soaps, five washer levels, an extension lance for tall jobs and a surface cleaner for paving. The job board has 22 jobs in five districts, from Primrose Lane and the Harbour Front to Market Square, Hilltop Park and Lighthouse Point at sunset. Each finished job brightens the town map and earns a thank-you note from the customer. Beat the par time and use less water than par for extra stars and bonus pay, or replay any finished job in free play.

How to play

Aim with the mouse and hold the left button to spray, or press Space to spray at the middle of the screen. Drag with the right mouse button or use W, A, S and D to walk around the job, and scroll or press Q and E to step closer or back. On a touch screen, hold one finger on the job and sweep (the water lands just above your finger), drag with two fingers to walk around and pinch to step closer. Keys: 1 to 4 pick a nozzle, R turns the fan, X changes soap, C switches to the surface cleaner, H shows what is left, Esc pauses.
