To play chess online free, open Checkmate Club on Mayavoo and press Play: it runs in your browser tab, with no download and no account. You can face a computer opponent at two levels or hand the same phone, tablet or laptop to a friend for a two-player game.
Below is how a game works, what the board shows you, and when a bigger chess server is the better fit.
Start a game in under a minute
- Open the Checkmate Club page on Mayavoo.
- Press Play game. A short Google ad may appear first; nothing interrupts you once the board is up.
- Pick Beginner computer, Casual computer, or same-device play.
- Click or tap one of your pieces, then a highlighted square to move it.
That is the whole setup. There is no sign-up form, and you do not need to install an app on desktop, mobile or tablet. The board works in any orientation, so a phone held upright is fine.
What the board gives you
The setting is a calm evening club with a carved walnut board, and the game keeps the screen simple. A few helpers make positions easier to read:
- Legal-move highlights show where the selected piece can go.
- Move history lists the game so far.
- Captured pieces sit beside the board, so material is easy to count.
- Flip turns the board around. It changes the view only, not who moves.
Pause, Resign and New Game are always available. If you prefer a keyboard, focus the board and move with the arrow keys and Enter.
Full rules, not a simplified version
Some free chess games skip the tricky rules. Checkmate Club plays standard chess:
| Rule | How Checkmate Club handles it |
|---|---|
| Castling | Supported |
| En passant | Supported |
| Promotion | All four pieces offered |
| Checkmate and stalemate | Detected |
| Threefold repetition, 50-move rule | You can claim the draw |
| Fivefold repetition, 75-move rule | Draw applied automatically |
So the endgame behaves the way a club player expects, and a beginner learns the real rules from the start.
Why play it on Mayavoo
Mayavoo is a free site for browser games made by independent creators. The team plays each game and checks its files and network behavior before it goes live, and every game runs in a sandboxed frame kept apart from your Mayavoo account. You only sign in, with Google or GitHub, if you want to like a game or post a comment.
The computer opponents run locally in your browser. Your position and settings last for the current play session, so finish a game before you close the tab.
If chess is not the mood, the chess, cards and board games section also has Ludo, carrom and crazy eights.
Tips for a better game
- Start on Beginner if you are new, then move up to Casual once you win comfortably.
- Read the move history after a loss to find the point where the game turned.
- Watch the captured pieces row: if you are down material, trade less and look for tactics.
- Use same-device mode to teach a child or a friend, flipping the board so each side sees it from their own chair.
- Try the keyboard controls on a laptop: arrows to pick a square, Enter to move, which is quicker than reaching for a trackpad.
When another site fits better
Checkmate Club has no clocks and no online ratings, and it does not match you against strangers over the internet. For rated games with players around the world, Lichess is free, open source and ad-free, and Chess.com offers free play with an optional Premium plan. Use Mayavoo for a quick, quiet game against the computer or a friend beside you.
