The quickest way into trivia games online is to open one in your browser and start answering: no app, no download, no account. On Mayavoo, the Trivia and quiz category does exactly that, and Quiz Compass is the game to start with.
What makes a trivia game worth your time
Plenty of quiz pages are a list of questions with a score at the bottom. A good trivia game gives you a reason to keep going. Look for four things:
- Questions someone checked. Wrong answers marked as right ruin trivia fast.
- A spread of subjects, so one weak topic does not end the fun.
- A goal beyond the score, such as a race, a map or a collection.
- Settings that suit you, like a timer you can relax or switch off.
Quiz Compass, the pick on Mayavoo
Quiz Compass by Blue Gecko Labs ticks all four. It is a trivia voyage across a painted sea chart.
You spin a brass compass to pick a category: nature, history, science, geography, arts or sport. Each question has four answers and an hourglass. Get it right and that category's badge comes aboard. Collect all six badges and you make landfall at the next island. Three wrong answers on one island and your hull gives out, so you sail back and try again.
You are also racing. Pip the parrot, Olive the octopus and Tess the turtle sail the same route and move forward with every question you answer. Reach the last harbour of a sea before them and you win its crown.
The creators say they each wrote questions for the subjects they know best and then checked each other's facts more than once. Questions run from easy ones in Lantern Shallows to hard ones in Far Horizon, and no question repeats until you have seen every one of its kind.
How to play
| Action | Mouse or touch | Keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Spin the compass | Spin button | Space |
| Answer | Tap one of four answers | 1 to 4 |
| Remove two wrong answers | Power-up | R |
| Add ten seconds | Power-up | T |
| Skip to another question in the same category | Power-up | S |
| Pause | Pause button | Escape |
In Settings you can set the timer to 20 or 30 seconds or turn it off, mute the sound and reduce motion. Badges and answer marks use shapes as well as colours, which helps if you find colours hard to tell apart. It runs on desktop, phone and tablet in any orientation.
When you want a different kind of quiz
Mayavoo has a few neighbours for the same mood:
- Common Thread in Word games: sort sixteen tags into four hidden groups, with a new daily exhibit.
- Out of the Box in Brain teasers and memory: trick riddles where anything on screen might be the answer.
- Mind Sprout: three short brain drills that adapt to how you are doing.
If you want a quiz that a host runs live for a room full of players, a classroom or office tool such as Kahoot is built for that and will suit you better. For playing on your own, at your own pace, a browser game is simpler.
Why play on Mayavoo
Mayavoo is a free home for browser games made by independent creators. Before a game goes live, the team plays it and checks its files and network behavior, and every game runs in a sandboxed frame. A game may show a short Google ad before it starts and when you leave, but none while you play. Quiz Compass itself has no text chat or purchases. Sign in with Google or GitHub only if you want to like a game or leave a comment.
